Portable Appliance Testing
Portable Appliance Testing was introduced to enable companies to comply with the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989.
Around 2000 reported workplace fires a year are caused by faulty electrical appliances, as are a high proportion of electrical related workplace accidents. Such accidents can arise from cut or frayed leads, badly wired plugs and damaged appliances.
The Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 puts a duty of care upon ‘duty holders’ which apply to both the employer and employee to ensure the safety of all persons using the premises and equipment.
